Active Plays

FAQ's:

bullet What is an Active Play? Click here
bullet

A Play is an animated training presentation that explains a particular feature, function, or benefit within Active Applications. There is a "Help Agent" resembling a simple cartoon character that talks, moves around, and sometimes makes life-like gestures to further articulate important information being presented. Realism is enhanced through the extensive use of screen images taken from the actual software.

bullet Why offer Active Help Plays? Click here
bullet

For many of us Active Plays offer the quickest method for familiarizing ourselves with what we need to know to use the software. All the viewer has to do is select the Play they are interested in viewing, sit back, then watch and listen. Plays are particularly useful for demonstrating procedures and processes from start to finish. The first time through the viewer may decide to allow the Play to run without interruption. In successive viewings the Play can be paused, rewound part way, or fast forwarded if certain details need to be reviewed.

Where and How do I view these Active Help Plays?

To view a particular Active Help Play, you will simply select it from a menu of plays.  There are two menu systems available to you: the Playmaker Play List and Playmaker Player.  You may use either or both of these menu options, whenever it suits you.  Any Active Help Play available on one menu is also available on the other.

The Playmaker Play List: This alternative adds a menu option under the Help button on your Active Accounting main menu named, Active Play List.  Selecting Active Play List presents a menu of Active Help Plays organized by program application.  Its' advantage is: any Active Help Play can be easily selected for viewing without leaving Active Accounting and starting up a separate program.

The Playmaker Player: This other alternative uses a separate program named "Playmaker Player" to display a menu of the same Active Help Plays  It will also present a menu of Active Help Plays organized by program application.  Its' advantage is: Active Accounting need not be installed on the computer used to view the plays.  For example you can take the Active Help Plays and Playmaker Player home with you and run them equally as well.

The same Active Help Plays are made available for both the Playmaker Play List and the Playmaker Player program.  The only difference lies in the file format of the Active Help Play file.  The Active Help Plays to be added to the Playmaker Play List are downloaded in a compressed .zip file format.  The Active Help Plays to be added to the Playmaker Player menu are downloaded in a compressed .plz file format.

You have to admit with two different menu systems at your disposal, it's a win-win situation for every UDS customer!

How do I prepare for and then use Active Playmaker Player to view Active Help Plays?

bullet First, just what is Active Playmaker Player?
bullet

This is the name of the program required to "run" Active Plays. It performs much the same function as a "Stage" does for Actors in a real play. When you start the Active Playmaker Player program, it will load a menu listing all the Active Plays you have previously downloaded and applied. You will then select the particular Active Play you would like to view from this menu, and Active Playmaker Player will launch that Active Play for you. The user must first download the Active Playmaker Player program from this web page and allow it to be installed on their system (step one).

bullet Now how do I download and install the Active Playmaker Player program?
bullet

Proceed to Step One below to initiate downloading and installation of Active Playmaker Player. Then complete steps two, three, and four in turn to finish the process.

Getting Started Using Active Playmaker Player

Step One: Active Playmaker Player must be installed before the play downloads can be installed. Click on ACTIVE PLAYMAKER PLAYER to begin downloading. Installation of Active Playmaker Player should start automatically upon completion of downloading.

Step Two: If your workstation uses Windows 95 or 98, you will need to download at least one Microsoft Agent in order to be able to run the Active Plays. Click on DOWNLOAD AGENTS to be taken to a web page which lists several Agents you may select from to download.

If you are running Windows 2000, XP or XP Pro on your workstation, you do not need to download a Microsoft Agent as offered above, but you can if you like. If eventually when running a Play you find that your Agent doesn't speak, click on this XP link to receive directions to a web site where you can download an audio update for XP users.

Step Three: Now you may download the Active Plays desired from the Active Plays Library table below. Select an underlined link. Choose 'Save to Disk' when prompted.  When specifying the path use the folder name suggested in the rightmost column.  That folder name should be under the same directory path and folder you installed Active Playmaker Player to.  Example: C:\Active Playmaker Player\Accounts Receivable would be a good place to download any Active Plays related to AR.

Step Four: When you have finished downloading all the Active Plays you want, start the Active Playmaker Player program.

  1. On the Active Playmaker Player screen select the button.

  2. Select the button to browse to where you saved the downloaded Play files (*.plz).

  3. Highlight one of the Play files then select the button.

  4. Select the button. The selected Active Play will be added to the Active Playmaker Player menu for that application name.

The Play can now be selected from the Active Playmaker Player menu and run (viewed). You may repeat Step Four as many times as necessary to apply all the Play files you have downloaded in Step Three.

All plays related to a single application can be downloaded at the same time by selecting the underlined link from the Bundled Plays Downloadable column of the Active Plays Library table below. This would be the most convenient option for the new user.

How do I install and then use the Playmaker Play List to view Active Help Plays?

The initial installation of the Playmaker Play List starts with the 7.1 to 8.1 update CD ROM Disk previously distributed.  The directions are listed again below for your convenience.

Initial installation of the Playmaker Play List to the Active Accounting main menu:

  1. On the CD Rom disk is a folder named “Active Plays”.  Using MS Windows “Explorer”, Copy & Paste the Active Plays folder along with its’ entire contents into the Active Accounting folder on your Server.  Keeping all the Active Plays within the Active Plays folder will keep things better organized.  We refer to your Active Accounting folder as the folder where all of your Active Accounting program files are saved and updates are applied.

  2. From the Active Accounting main menu select: Reports / Control Files / Main Control File.  The System Control Information window will appear after a moment.  Within the “Company defaults” tab find the field box labeled: “Active Plays Folder”.   The field box will be blank.

  3. Create the path to your Active Plays folder that you pasted into your Active Accounting folder using the convenient ‘browse” button just to the right of the field box.

  4. With the suitable path now showing in the field box, save your changes by selecting the “OK” button in the upper right hand corner of the System Control Information window.

  5.  Here is an example of what our path looks like: \\UDS\Active Accounting\Active Plays\  however, yours will of course, be different.

  6. Quit out of Active Accounting entirely then restart Active Accounting.

  7. From the Active Accounting main menu select:  Reports / Search for New Reports.  After a few moments the system may come back and say, “zero reports found”.

  8. From the Active Accounting main menu select:  Reports / Help / Playmaker Play List, and the application list should now be displayed.

After performing the initial installation procedure above, you will periodically want to visit table 2. below for any new or updated Active Help Plays that will be  periodically posted there for download.

These are .zip files you will download and save to disk, then unzip into the Active Accounting/Active Plays/"Folder Name" shown.
